Ice on Vättern

After many days of adverse weather conditions, an ice-skating tour brings me to the second-largest lake in Sweden – which is three times larger than Bodensee (Lake Constance). Parts of the lake were covered with transparent ice with a hard and level surface.

Vättern is around 240 km away from Stockholm by bus. The newly formed ice was wonderfully transparent and allowed us see the ground of shallow waters. I have rarely seen such hard and level ice before, permitting fast ice-skating with little efforts. It was therefore definitely worth to trade in a week-day at university for a sun-day on Vättern.
